About Me

Hello and welcome!

My name is Niddal Mustafa and I am a journalist and producer passionate about storytelling that informs, challenges and connects.

I am a Journalism and Biomedical Science graduate from the University of Queensland. I am the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Nine-Walkley Scholarship. As part of this, I was interviewed by leading media figures including Anita Jacoby (media executive), Jenny Brockie (former SBS Insight host), Margie McLew (9 News Content Director), Laura Sparkes (60 Minutes Executive Producer) and Dan Ilic (freelance executive producer).

In 2024, I received the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia's Ossie Award for Best Short-Form Audio, recognised for my reporting on Australian victim-survivors of female genital mutilation.

I am currently working full time with Nine News Sydney, producing across the News department, 60 minutes, A Current Affair and The Today Show. These roles have allowed me to sharpen my editorial judgement, work under pressure in fast-paced environments and contribute to nationally recognised programs.

Beyond Nine, I have reported with ABC Radio Brisbane, filing during the federal election, where I interviewed then-key political voices such as Senator Fatima Payman on leaving Labor and the establishment of her new party, as well as speaking with local candidates. I am also about to begin freelancing with The Guardian, extending my work into print and digital reporting.

At the heart of my career is a passion for broadcasting and I aspire to become a reporter, telling stories that matter with integrity and impact.

Thanks for swinging by! I invite you to explore some of my work and get in touch.

Judge's Comments: Niddal Abdelrahman’s investigation of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Australia is a thorough and
sensitive exploration of a difficult topic. I was impressed with the sensitivity of their approach, while
maintaining an unflinching focus on what is very confronting content. It is clear they built trust and
rapport with women they interviewed and provided important medical and statistical context to their
accounts.

Senator Fatima Payman and the Birth of Australia’s Voice Aired on ABC Radio With Ellen Fanning (2022 Federal Election Coverage)

Aired on ABC Drive with Ellen Fanning, my package examined Senator Fatima Payman’s departure from the Labor Party and the launch of her new political movement, Australia’s Voice. The piece explored the motivations behind her decision, the party’s objectives, and the wider implication of minor parties on Australian politics.

I edited, produced and voiced this entire package myself. I interviewed Senator Payman, Queensland Senate candidate Michelle McDonald, and political scientist Dr Paul Williams; carrying out in-depth research and scripting the segment from start to finish.

Podcast Episode on Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply underrepresented issue in mainstream discourse, yet in many communities of colour, it is a very harsh and painful reality. Here in Australia, Australian-born children are at risk of this archaic and dangerous procedure. So, I recognised a troubling disconnect between the lived experience and looming threats of this practice, and the public’s awareness. I embarked on this audio project to inform and raise awareness about FGM, driven by the belief that awareness is the first step toward change.

I am profoundly grateful to the brave women who entrusted me with their stories. Their courage in speaking out about such a vulnerable and taboo experience is deeply inspiring. One of the women shared that this was the first time she had ever spoken of the experience, out loud, to another human being. This profound act speaks to the transformative power of vulnerability in storytelling. My hope is that their stories, echoing the struggles of millions of women and girls around the world, cultivate empathy and understanding in all who hear them.

This piece won a 2024 Ossie JERAA award for best short-form audio
